Walmart Canada Extends Partnership with Cornershop

Walmart has agreed to expand its partnership with delivery intermediary Cornershop for grocery delivery in Canada, months after being blocked from acquiring the Latin America-focused platform in Mexico in June this year. Going forward, the service will operate from 14 stores in the greater Toronto area, with Cornershop due to fulfill grocery orders within as little as 60 minutes.

Walmart Canada has been making a number of investments in its digital capabilities this year, mirroring the retailer’s activities in the US in many ways. In August, Walmart partnered with Instacart to offer a Canada-wide delivery service. It is also outfitting more locations with click & collect, a key initiative across most of its supercenter network enabling online grocery orders.

Brands should review their available portfolio, product content and prices for their items on the Cornershop interface. As the relationship grows between Walmart and the intermediary, brands should focus on winning the Cornershop digital shelf experience. Additionally, given Cornershop’s extensive LATAM operations, brands should take the opportunity to share learnings for the platform regionally in their own organizations, developing best practices.
