Aldi UK Extends Deliveroo Trial into London

Aldi UK extends Deliveroo delivery trial in London to progress its UK online grocery strategy.

Aldi UK has extended its rapid grocery delivery service to London, after a successful trial with Deliveroo from eight stores in the Midlands. Customers in Camden living within a two-mile radius of an Aldi store can now select products from a range of 200 essential items, for home delivery within 30 minutes. Aldi staff pick and pack the orders in-store, which are then delivered by Deliveroo’s driver network.

The partnership is the latest move by Aldi to progress its UK online grocery strategy, which was largely absent (except for its BWS platform) prior to the coronavirus pandemic, despite successful online initiatives elsewhere, such as its Instacart tie-up in the US. In April, the retailer launched its first UK online shopping service for essential grocery bundles, with plans to continue expanding its partnership with Deliveroo across the UK - putting further pressure on the Big 4 supermarkets, who until now had only competed with the discounters in-store.

As online grocery accelerates in the UK - with COVID-19 fuelling a further GBP1 billion in online grocery sales for 2020 - delivery intermediaries are becoming a key enabler for retailers looking to test the waters without having to rely on internal resources. Suppliers should engage with intermediaries as a channel in their own right, developing tailored product, pricing and promotional strategies to drive conversion on their platforms.
